
Dr. Martin received his undergraduate degree from the Johns Hopkins University,
his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania,
and his Master's degree in public health (Epidemiology)
from the University of California, Berkeley.
He served as Intern, Resident and Chief Resident
in the Department of Medicine and Fellow in the
Division of Infectious Diseases, all at UCSF,
prior to joining the faculty of the Department
of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
His principal interest is in the epidemiology of human herpesvirus 8 (Kaposi's
sarcoma-associated herpesvirus) and its relationship to Kaposi's Sarcoma. He
is also actively investigating several HIV-related questions including the long-term
consequences of treatment with highly active antiretroviral medications among
HIV-infected individuals, the feasibility of providing post-exposure prophylaxis
for sexual and recreational drug use exposure to HIV, and an intervention to
enhance adherence with anti-retroviral medications among HIV-infected persons.
