James Kahn, MD

James Kahn, MD
Professor of Medicine, UCSF

Research Interests
Dr. Kahn’s research activities focus on HIV disease modeling, medical informatics and consumer-based research.  In the past Dr. Kahn conducted Phase 1 through Phase 3 protocols and launched two significant clinical research projects: the Post-Exposure Prevention (PEP) project and the Primary HIV Infection (Options Project).  In both cases Dr. Kahn identified and mentored the clinical directors of those projects, Drs. Michelle Roland and Rick Hecht (respectively).   Dr. Kahn is a lead investigator of the CFAR-sponsored Network for Integrated Clinical Study (CNICS), an effort to link NIH CFARs into a comprehensive electronic medical record system for clinical research and he received an NIH Road map initiative on the feasibility of integrating and expanding clinical research networks.   Dr. Kahn’s present work is focused on utilizing sophisticated electronic health record systems to store and retrieve data from various platforms for research.  The primary health record system under Dr. Kahn’s leadership is the health electronic medical record, HERO, (Health Education Record Organizer), which is the patient database at the Ward 86 clinic at San Francisco General Hospital.  This work is supported by peer-reviewed NIH and AHRQ grants and has contributed to leading articles about empowering patients through access to information and personal health records.  Dr. Kahn and his group has integrated an enterprise level XRM tool into the electronic health record and is now investigating the role of mobile phones and specifically short messages texts (SMS) to improve healthcare.  Dr. Kahn is the clinical leader on a series of modeling papers of the HIV epidemic with ongoing collaborations among world leaders.  Dr. Kahn also leads and studies the implementation of mentoring programs for early career and mid-career translational scientists at UCSF.
