Laurence Huang, MD
Professor of Medicine
Research Focus
Dr. Huang is involved in clinical and translational research related to HIV-associated pulmonary disease, primarily Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) but increasingly tuberculosis (TB), bacterial pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). These studies are based on cohorts from San Francisco General Hospital and Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. The studies involve collaborations with researchers at the National Institutes of Health, University of Cincinnati, University of North Carolina, UCSF, University of Pittsburgh, University of Washington, and University of Colorado and Uganda’s Makerere University. Current research studies include: (1) An multinational cohort study of HIV-associated opportunistic pneumonias to determine the epidemiology, etiology, and outcome of pneumonias in persons with HIV infection; (2) Development and validation of several new molecular applications to study PCP epidemiology, diagnosis, drug-resistance, and host immune response; (3) Development and validation of several new molecular applications to study TB and bacterial pneumonia epidemiology and diagnosis; (4) Comprehensive examination of the composition and function of the lung microbiome in persons with HIV infection; (5) Molecular-epidemiology study that addresses whether PCP results from person-to-person transmission (as has been convincingly demonstrated from animal-to-animal laboratory studies) and whether disease results from reactivation of latent infection or from recent exposure and infection.
